Tech Neck

'Tech Neck', is becoming a global epidemic thanks to modern technology.

I'm referring to the pain you get in the back of your neck from spending too long looking at a screen - be it on your laptop, computer, gaming device, mobile phone etc.

The neck, indeed the whole spine, is highly flexible - it's easy to bend the head forward from the shoulders when you want to look down. However, the problems start when you do this repeatedly, or fixedly, over a long period of time. It causes inflammation in the muscles and connective tissue around C7, leading to pain. Ultimately, the spine will grow in a distorted fashion, creating a permanent hump there.

What is the solution? Well, the answer is surprisingly simple: avoid bending from your shoulders! Instead pivot your head froward slightly on the top of the spine and cast your eyes down, rather than your whole head.

If you're sitting up at desk, then a plump cushion in your back can help to keep you back. If you're in an easy chair you might be able to use cushions to prop yourself in a semi-reclined position. When you use your mobile you can try holding it higher up. When you use your laptop you can support it on something to make it higher.

It's easier said than done. The screens are intensely compelling; we lose track of time; we forget our good intentions and our habits are strong. But it's well-worth trying to change those habits before it's too late.

An Alexander Technique Teacher can help you with that:)
